Taking a stroll in Mąkołowiec, Tychy

Taking a stroll in Mąkołowiec, Tychy

We made four hikes to this district located in the northwestern part of the city. The first two hikes were connected with the district church. The church is called after St.Father Pio. It has been under construction for over 15 years. The main church building is not ready yet, and all liturgy takes place at the chapel. This is where we attended a concert of a well-known Polish singer during the district festival. The festival took part in the church courtyard, where a huge tent had been installed.

How can I resist a hot tasty frankfurter?

There was even an auction, when a soccer ball with a signature of a famous local soccer player was sold to a lady for PLN 1,100.

The rotating car attraction was very popular among kids.

After the concert of AQuartet, there was a solo concert of a famous Polish singer, who was popular in the eighties. The concert took place in the church chapel, where the liturgy is usually held. The singer sang very distinctly and not too fast, therefore, we could understand some of the lyrics. Her colleague, the guitar player, also sang a couple of great songs. Thank you, dear musicians!

Mąkołowiec District (read: "monkowovits") occupies a large forest area stretching to Murcki, Giszowiec and Nikiszowiec that belong to Katowice, the province capital. The city border is close to the Mąkołowiec Brook that flows from the forest on the western boundary of the city into the Mlechna River. During our hike, we crossed the small brook and decided to walk further along the forest road before we re-entered the city in the area of Kolibri Street.

We were surprised to see this ladder attached to a tree that stads on the verge of a field. I called it an observation psot. My wife got interested, climbed up the ladder and sat comfortable upstairs for a while.

We also saw a forest animal feeder in the Glimmer Forest, as well as two chamois in the distance.

The district is limited by Mikołowska Street from the south, the railway tracks from the west, the forest from the north, and by Dołowa Street in the east. The intersection of Mąkołowska Street and Objazdowa Street is the center of the district. This is where you can find the advertising board, a grocery store, a restaurant, and a bus stop. The district has several grocery stores and catering establishments, a gas station and a McDonald’s restaurant. The district includes many arable fields that are crossed by the Mąkołowiec Brook.

The history of the district dates back the mid-16th century, when the Mąkolski family owned a hamlet in this area. A cluster of houses appeared under the family name in 1710. The Tyskie city records of 1732 mention the name Monkolec, the Silesian variant of the hamlet name. By 1800, there were eight cottages in the hamlet, and later, as a result of a rapid development of the hamlet, Mąkołowiec was the home for 234 inhabitants living in 21 houses in 1871. In 1938, the number of inhabitants increased to 447. In 1951, the village was incorporated into the city of Tychy. You can reach this district by buses 272 or 273 from downtown Tychy.
