Siedlce, the city where we are staying now, is the center of the county consisting of 35 villages. We started exploring the nearby villages. On a fine Sunday we took a hike through several villages located to the north-west and to the west of Siedlce: Strzała, Chodów, Niwiski, Nowe Opole, Stare Opole, Nowe Iganie.

On another fine day we walked to the north-east and reached the village of Żabokliki that adjoins the city and whose residents attend a liturgy in the neighboring border district of Siedlce visiting St.Maximilian Kolbe Church there.

Visiting the village of Żabokliki

These villages are located close to forests and possess huge fields, where there are also dairy farms.

Niwiski and Nowe Opole are the smallest of the villages, having about 500 residents each, whereas other villages have a thousand and more residents. I would say the village churches are the top attractions there:

  • the Baroque church in Niwiski dating back to 1787;
  • the church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Stare Opole;
  • St.Mary Magdalene’s Church in Chodów.

We saw the some of the villages have a leisure center, the biggest one being in Chodów.

Strzała

It was the first village we saw on the northwestern outskirts of Siedlce. On a week day, you can reach this village by bus 10 from the city. However, we decided to use no municipal buses, and we walked all the way. We crossed the bridge across the River Liwiec and found ourselves in this village whose name means "arrow". It's indeed a one-street village that lies along Motorway 63 from Siedlce to Sokolow.

The village of Strzała soon ended, and we entered the village of Chodów (read, ['khodoov]), after which we proceeded to Niwiski, and then towards the Warsaw Road past other three villages.

The village is privileged to have a kindergarten and a store. The present kindergarten occupies the building of the former leisure center, and a new leisure center was built not far from the village entry. However, the old memorial plaque remained at the building. It is dedicated to an outstanding fellow countryman. The memorial plaque reads,
Szczepan Ciekot People’s House
In recognition of the merit for the folk movement,
the inhabitants of the Siedlce land gave the leisure center
the name of Szczepan Ciekot, a son of this land.
On the day of the people’s feast on June 6, 1965.

We also saw an independence monument in this village. It is in front of the village leisure center. The inscription on the memorial plaque reads,

Niwiski
I had seen this destination of Google Maps, but I had not imagined how beautiful it might be. Everything about this tiny village is great except perhaps the polluted pond located next to the Volunteer Fire Brigade. We were amazed seeing and visiting Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary church in this village.

You can see a statue of Virgin Mary at the entrance to the church. The memorial plaque on the pedestal commemorates the survival of the war by the community of Niwiski. The date is: September 6, 1949.

In addition, we visited the roadside chapel dedicated to St.John Nepomucene on the ourskirts of the village.

I liked these hay pyramids and decided to take a picture of them.

Like in many other Polish villages we visited, the OSP - the Volunteer Fire Bridage - play a very important role in the social life. Its building houses the village club, and the firemen take an active part in all village events. You can see a small statue of Archangel St.Michael and a memorial plaque on the facade of the OSP. Archangel St.Michael is the patron saint of firemen. The memorial plaque commemorates the centenary of the Volunteer Fire Brigade in Niwiski.

These villages look lovely and peaceful. A very nice place to visit.

I agree with you, Irene! We might revisit some of them, also by taking a direct bus there. Live and see.
